Large-Scale Retail Advertising Signage | Light Pollution Assessment & Mitigation Strategy

HIGHLIGHTS

SHARE

Project Overview

A large-format retail flagship project required specialist lighting input to address regulatory concerns relating to high-brightness advertising lightboxes and LED display screens. Prior to commencement of operations, additional technical justification was required to demonstrate that the proposed installations would not result in unacceptable light pollution or safety impacts.

The Challenge

The key challenge was to assess and mitigate potential obtrusive light impacts arising from prominent illuminated signage, while preserving the intended visual performance of the displays. The assessment needed to address multiple risk factors, including:

  • Glare impacts to surrounding road users
  • Light spill affecting nearby sensitive receptors
  • Upward light spill contributing to sky glow

The submission process allowed a single opportunity for approval, requiring a robust, defensible technical solution within a constrained timeframe.

Our Approach

As the appointed lighting engineer, we undertook a targeted site assessment and a detailed review of lighting layouts and product specifications. The analysis was carried out in accordance with relevant Australian guidelines for the control of obtrusive light, supported by quantitative modelling using industry-standard lighting calculation software.

The design process focused on achieving compliance without compromising the visual effectiveness of the advertising displays.

Key Mitigation Measures

The final strategy included:

  • Time-based luminance control to suit different operating periods
  • Guidance on display colour palettes, content contrast, and transition frequency
  • Refinements to glazing and frontage elements to manage light transmission

Outcome

The technical assessment and mitigation strategy were accepted on first submission, enabling the project to proceed as intended. The outcome demonstrated that complex, high-impact retail signage can be successfully delivered when supported by early, specialist lighting input and evidence-based analysis.

Value to Client

This project highlights the importance of engaging experienced lighting engineers for projects involving high-brightness advertising and LED displays, particularly where regulatory scrutiny and environmental performance are critical considerations.
